  • About | Listen Communication

Listen Communication blends tradition, craft, and refined aesthetics since 2013.Designing timeless spaces through modern interpretations of Korean heritage. Creative Director Sangyoon Kim Weaving the Past and Future Founded in 2013 by Sangyoon Kim, Listen Communication is a multidisciplinary studio engaged in architecture, interior design, furniture, lighting, curation, and art. Rooted in Korean heritage and guided by a contemporary sensibility, our work reinterprets tradition to create spaces and objects that resonate across time. Through deep cultural exploration and collaborative craftsmanship, we envision a future where the past is not preserved as nostalgia but transformed into new narratives of Korean identity. • National Asia Culture Center | Listen Communication

Space designed by Listen Communication: National Asia Culture Center | 화원 / HWA WON National Asia Culture Center 화원 / HWA WON Location: 38 Munhwajeondang-ro, Dong-gu, Gwangju 61485, Republic of Korea Area: 323.91m2 Completed: October 2018 Photographer: Jaeyoon Kim Awards 2018 Korea Interior Design Best Award "名家名人賞" 수상 2020 Korean Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award / 문화체육관광부 장관상 수상 Press ArchDaily AECCafe Yinji Space Archello Client Asia Culture Center / 국립아시아문화전당 The Asia Culture Center is a public institution that serves as an international cultural hub, offering a space for the exchange, collection, research, production, exhibition, performance, archiving, and distribution of cultural resources. The designer was tasked with creating the lobby and lounge area of the international conference room, a space frequently visited by distinguished national and international guests. The client requested that the space reflect the traditional identity of Korea, as it would serve as an exhibition venue showcasing the country’s cultural heritage to visitors. Rather than directly incorporating traditional Korean elements, the designer approached the task by creatively reinterpreting the past and present, merging them into a cohesive and modern space. Intangible cultural heritage craft artifacts are displayed alongside contemporary craft objects, many of which the designer co-created with master artisans. Although the lobby is an open area, the layout evokes the intimate, sheltered feel of a Hanok (traditional Korean house), with a central courtyard that brings a sense of tranquility and cohesion to the space. In the lounge, the seating is arranged to embrace the space, creating a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. As visitors pass through the brass-finished entrance, they encounter a bell from Beopjusa temple, dating back to the Joseon Dynasty, created by the master Jucheoljang (an Intangible Cultural Property of Casting). Guests can ring the bell, adding an acoustic layer to the experience. The central area of the lobby is designed to evoke the feeling of a Hanok’s courtyard and can also host cultural events when needed. A corridor adjacent to the lobby offers a serene space for tea during conferences, with traditional Korean crafts displayed within the table for visitors to enjoy. At the back of the lobby, the lounge exudes a calming atmosphere, enhanced by luxurious materials used for the sofas and tables. The table design evokes the serene qualities of meditative watercolor paintings, while the table lamp offers a modern reinterpretation of traditional Korean fans. A large artwork by Paiksun Kim covers the wall, creating soft light through Hanji (traditional Korean paper), and the shadows cast through the traditional window frame patterns, along with the reflective ceiling, recall the peaceful image of a still pond. While the space undoubtedly exudes a sense of Korean tradition, it seamlessly blends the old with the new through understated, modern design details. The designer has successfully balanced historical beauty with contemporary sensibilities, creating a harmonious space where visitors can experience Korean traditional culture in a fresh and meaningful way. < >

  • Layered Seoul | Listen Communication

Space designed by Listen Communication: Layered Seoul | 시그니엘 레지던스 #1 Layered Seoul 시그니엘 레지던스 #1 Location: Lotte World Tower, 300, Olympic-ro, Songpa-gu, Seoul, Korea Space Planning & Design: Listen Communication / Designer Sangyoon Kim Completed: April 2025 Area: 271 m2 Photographer: Jaeyoon Kim “A Quiet Sanctuary Above the City” The Signiel Residence Renovation Project, located on the upper floors of Lotte World Tower, the symbol and tallest building in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is a space that contains the philosophy of the client and designer Kim Sang-yoon, who want to blend cutting-edge architectural style, long-standing Korean tradition, the temporality and emotion of the city of Seoul, and the calm layers of Korean sentiment into everyday life. The spatial layers inspired by Hanok, the scent of raw wood permeating the space, and the city and the overlapping natural landscapes seen through the windows that change every day are not disconnected but part of continuity, creating a psychological connection between the space and the city of Seoul. When you enter the living room, which is a courtyard space away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the lighting that is elaborately hidden so that the splendor is not revealed in the simplicity further maximizes the beauty of the space. The open and meditative layout that promotes natural flow and communication between light and space forms a subtle boundary while maintaining visual continuity with the vertical sliding wooden door with a bamboo motif. The light-filled ceiling, made by combining wood and Korean paper, is reminiscent of traditional window paper and provides a sense of tranquility to the space. The quietly stacked wood grain and sentimental stones create a tactile contrast, allowing us to feel the honesty of the materials and the depth of the craftsman’s delicate touch. The furniture carefully made by the craftsman in the traditional way and the elaborate fabric panel composition throughout the space also add even more density to the space. This project, which combines these traditional elements with minimal modern beauty, captures the unique identity of Korea, as if it were a modern sensibility overlaying traditional memories. This space is not just a high-end residence, but a landscape that encapsulates the quiet accumulation that exists in the city of Seoul, and reveals the attitude of the house that quietly accepts life beyond simple residence, showing a new vision of a quiet luxury lifestyle where Korean cultural heritage, craftsmanship, and modern life coexist with quiet dignity. "A Story in Every Step" Organized in commemoration of the 48th Session of the World Heritage Committee, this exhibition aims to share the value of Korea's national heritage, or K-Heritage, with the world. Across Korea, countless stories have been added layer upon layer, spanning from prehistoric times to the present day. History, arts, and the lives and spirit of its people can be found at every corner of this land, making Korea itself a vast, living storybook. The Korea Heritage Service and the Korea Heritage Agency operate the Korean Heritage Routes, allowing visitors to discover and experience the value and charm of Korea's national heritage up close. This exhibition selected five routes where nature and people, as well as culture and art, are in harmony, and reimagined them as spaces where traditional and modern design, crafts, and media art come together. We hope the stories that begin here will lead to a new journey of exploring national heritage sites, serving as a meaningful opportunity to remember the value and beauty of Korea's national heritage for a long time. < >
